Professional Accordionist
World & Fusion Music
Biography
Tiago Marques (b. 1988), based in Maia (Porto), is a Portuguese accordionist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. Largely self-taught, he first picked up the accordion at age 8 while playing with the Portuguese folk group of Bienne (Switzerland). Since 2024, he has been studying privately with Serbian accordionist Aleksandar Raskovic, and from late 2025, with Portuguese accordionist Inês Vaz.
Over the last two decades, he has performed in Portugal and abroad and built a catalog that moves between folk roots, contemporary writing, and exploratory instrumental music. He co-leads Alma Menor, which released Em Tons de Aguarela (2018) and Capitulo I - Raizes de Xisto (2024/2025). With the instrumental project Cerebral Pain, he released seven albums and 87 tracks. He also released the album Casco Duro with the band Mula Ruça.
With Tiago Morais, he took part in Piperegrinos, a traveling project promoted by the Xunta de Galicia during Xacobeo 2021–2022 that brought together bagpipers from across the Iberian Peninsula. In 2025, he marks the Centenary of the Birth of Carlos Paredes by arranging and reinterpreting pieces by the virtuoso of the Portuguese guitar.
Experience & Artistic Path
Since 2007, he has performed on national and international stages, balancing tradition with a personal, modern approach to the instrument.
Projects he founded (or has been part of) include:
- Tiago A. Marques (2011–) — A personal project that continues the exploration initiated with Cerebral Pain, but with a less experimental and more sophisticated focus.
- Alma Menor (2014–) — A fusion duo with bagpiper Tiago Morais, dedicated to original creations that combine bagpipes with accordion.
- Ti Folia (2015–) — A folk project with bagpiper Tiago Morais and percussionist Tiago Araújo, focused on the traditional songbook of the Estremadura region.
- Mula Ruça (2021–2024) — A world-music project inspired by Portuguese, Mediterranean, and Brazilian traditional music.
- Cerebral Pain (2007–2011) — An experimental project featuring accordion, guitar, mandolin, cavaquinho, and electronic elements. The full catalog was made freely available on jamendo.com.
